Flanked by huge solar arrays, Discovery prepares to dock with the International Space Station nearly 220 miles nautical above the earth. The space station, resulting from an international cooperative effort unparalleled in history, provides a platform for research that will expand mankind's knowledge of Earth and the universe. Thiokol's reusable solid rocket motors furnish 80 percent of the boost thrust needed by the shuttle to deliver the station's modules to orbit.
