Space Shuttle Atlantis delivers the U.S. Laboratory Module Destiny on ISS Flight 5A in February 2001.

Artist's Note: The image is a combination of traditional oil and digital painting. I was unable to paint the earthscape to my satisfaction with Photoshop's tool palette so I painted portions of the earthscape in oils and scanned the oil painting's image into Photoshop. That was then used as a basis to paint the rest of the background in Photoshop.

A relatively simple 3-D model of the 5A configuration and the Space Shuttle was built in Autodessyes FormZ. That model was used to get the viewpoint for the painting and line art from the 3-D model was then brought into Photoshop. This step replaced using a physical model or a freehand drawing as the basis for the work. Space Station Alpha and Shuttle Atlantis were then painted as a digital painting and combined with the digitally painted earthscape. No computer generated imagery or photography was used in this painting. Equipment was an Apple Power Macintosh G3/333 and a Wacom Intuos Graphics Tablet.
